What is the Kuwait family visa?
The Kuwait family visa — officially the Article 22 dependent residency — allows expats working legally in Kuwait (on Article 17 or 18 work permits) to bring their immediate family for long-term residency. Spouses and children live, study and access healthcare in Kuwait under the sponsor's residency.
The current rules came into force in early 2024 under Ministerial Resolution No. 56 of 2024 and were strengthened by the executive by-laws issued in late 2025. The headline change: a hard KD 800 minimum monthly salary for sponsors, with only nine professions exempt.
💡 Quick answer: Earn KD 800/month or work in one of 9 exempt professions → you can sponsor wife and children under 18. Parents are separate (Article 29, KD 300/year, humanitarian approval).
The KD 800 salary rule — explained
Since 2024, the Ministry of Interior (MOI) requires every sponsor to prove a minimum monthly salary of KD 800 on their official salary certificate before family residency is approved or renewed. This applies to both new applications and renewals.
The rule was introduced because Kuwait's executive regulations require expats to demonstrate they can financially support dependents on the local cost of living. The threshold was raised from the previous KD 550 limit.
⚠️How MOI verifies salary: Your salary certificate must be issued by your employer on company letterhead, stamped, and ideally attested by the Chamber of Commerce. MOI cross-checks this against the salary registered with PIFSS (social security) and your work-permit records. Inflated salary certificates are caught at renewal and can lead to fines or visa cancellation.
If your salary later drops below KD 800
The salary check is performed at the time of application and at every annual renewal. If your salary falls below KD 800 after sponsoring dependants, you can keep the family visa valid until renewal — but renewal will then be denied unless your salary recovers or you qualify under an exemption. Some sponsors have been summoned by the Residence Affairs Investigations Department for cross-checks.
The 9 exempt professions
The following professional categories can sponsor family regardless of salary, under the 2024 regulations:
👨⚖️Legal researchers (government sector)
🎓University & college professors
👨⚕️Doctors & qualified medical staff
📰Journalists & media professionals
🕌Imams, Quran teachers & religious figures
💡 The profession on your work permit and Civil ID must match your stated job. Someone listed as "Driver" cannot claim an Engineer exemption even if they hold the degree — MOI checks the registered job title.
Other exemption routes
The Director General of Residency Affairs can grant case-by-case humanitarian exemptions from the KD 800 rule for:
- Children born in Kuwait, regardless of parents' salary
- Children under 5 years born abroad to parents already residing in Kuwait
- Children of widowed or divorced parents (sole-parent cases)
- Special compassionate cases approved individually

Article 22 vs Article 29 — know the difference
Article 22
Spouse & Children Dependent Visa
Standard family residency for wife and children. Annually renewable. Linked to sponsor's residency — if sponsor's residency is cancelled, dependants are cancelled too.
Fee: KD 20/year per dependant (most sponsors)
Article 29
Parent Dependent Visa
For sponsoring father, mother or special humanitarian cases. Requires Director General approval. Renewed annually. Treated as a privilege, not a right.
Fee: KD 300/year per parent
⚠️The fee for parent dependants rose sharply in late 2025 — from KD 200 to KD 300 per year per parent. Combined with the KD 130 annual health insurance, sponsoring one parent now costs around KD 430/year in fixed government fees alone.
Family visa fees 2026
| Item | Fee (KD) | When paid |
| Entry visa stamp (per dependant) | KD 10 | At embassy/consulate before travel |
| Article 22 annual residency (standard sponsor) | KD 20/yr | At issuance + each renewal |
| Article 22 annual residency (investor/property owner sponsor) | KD 40/yr | At issuance + each renewal |
| Article 22 annual residency (self-sponsored sponsor) | KD 100/yr | At issuance + each renewal |
| Article 29 parent residency | KD 300/yr | At issuance + each renewal |

💰 Typical first-year total for sponsoring a wife + 1 child under Article 22: roughly KD 220–280 in government fees (residency + health + Civil ID + medical). Renewal each year: about KD 180.
Required documents
Documents needed from the sponsor:
📄 Civil ID (original + copy)
📄 Valid residency stamp
📄 Salary certificate (KD 800+, stamped)
📄 Bank salary credit letter (last 3 months)
📄 Tenancy contract or electricity bill
📄 Work permit (Art 17/18)
📄 Passport (original + copy)
Documents needed from the dependant(s):
📄 Passport (6+ months validity)
📄 Marriage certificate (for wife)
📄 Birth certificate (for children)
📄 4× passport photos (white background)
📄 Medical fitness certificate
📄 Recent vaccination record (children)
📄 No-objection letter (where applicable)
⚠️Attestation is critical. Marriage and birth certificates must be attested by: (1) the issuing country's authority, (2) the issuing country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, (3) the Kuwait Embassy in the issuing country, and (4) the Kuwait Ministry of Foreign Affairs after arrival. Skipping any step means rejection. Allow 4–8 weeks for full attestation.
How to apply — step-by-step
1
Confirm eligibility. Verify your salary is KD 800+ or that you fall under one of the 9 exempt professions. Your job title on the work permit must match the exemption.
2
Attest documents abroad. Get marriage and birth certificates attested in your home country and then by the Kuwait Embassy there. Without full attestation, the application will be rejected.
3
Apply for the entry visa from Kuwait. Visit a typing centre with all your documents. They prepare the MOI form (Article 22). Submit at the Residence Affairs Department in your governorate. Pay KD 10 stamp fee.
4
Receive the entry visa. MOI emails/SMS the entry visa to you in 1–3 weeks. Forward it to your family in your home country.
5
Family travels to Kuwait using the entry visa within its validity (usually 90 days).
6
Medical fitness test. Within 30 days of arrival, dependants must complete a medical fitness test at an approved government clinic. Cost: KD 10–15 per person. Results take 2–5 days.
7
Biometric fingerprinting — book via Sahel app under "Civil Information". Same-day or next-day appointments are now common.
8
Submit final residency stamping at MOI Residence Affairs. Pay the annual residency fee (KD 20/dependant for most) + health fee (KD 130 adult, KD 50 child).
9
Apply for Civil ID within 30 days of the residency stamp via PACI or Sahel app. KD 5 per dependant. Allow 5–10 working days for delivery.
Renewal & cancellation
Annual renewal
Dependent visas must be renewed every year, typically 30–60 days before expiry. Renewal requires:
- Sponsor still meets KD 800 salary rule (or remains in exempt profession)
- Sponsor's own residency is valid
- Updated salary certificate and accommodation proof
- Payment of annual fees (KD 20/dependant + KD 130/50 health)
Renewal can now be done via the Sahel app for most dependants — no typing centre required if no documents have changed.
Cancellation
The dependent visa is automatically cancelled when:
- The sponsor's own residency expires or is cancelled
- The sponsor leaves Kuwait permanently
- The dependant stays outside Kuwait for more than 6 consecutive months without prior MOI approval
- The marriage is legally dissolved (for wife dependants)
- A child sponsored as under-18 turns 18 (unless re-applying as student under 21)
Check your family visa status online
Three official ways to check Kuwait family visa or dependent residency status in 2026:
- Sahel app → Login with Civil ID → My Data → Residency. Shows expiry, type and current status in real time.

- PACI website → paci.gov.kw → Civil ID validity also shows residency status indirectly.
Common issues & how to fix
🚫"Salary certificate rejected" — Usually means the certificate is not on letterhead, missing employer's stamp, or shows a salary different from PIFSS records. Fix: get a new attested certificate that matches your registered salary exactly.
🚫"Profession does not match" — Your work-permit job title doesn't qualify for the claimed exemption. Fix: either request your employer to update your job title (requires Labour Ministry approval) or wait until your salary reaches KD 800.
🚫"Accommodation inadequate" — Tenancy contract shows a studio or shared flat that MOI deems unsuitable for a family. Fix: move to a 1-BR or 2-BR flat in your name before applying. Workers' camp addresses are not accepted.
🚫"Marriage certificate not attested" — Missing Kuwait Embassy stamp from issuing country, or missing Kuwait MOFA stamp. Fix: complete the full attestation chain — no shortcuts work.
🚫"Dependant overstayed" — Family member stayed outside Kuwait more than 6 months without permission, automatic cancellation. Fix: re-apply for entry visa as a new application (counts as fresh case).
FAQs — Kuwait Family Visa 2026
What is the minimum salary to sponsor family in Kuwait in 2026?
▾
The minimum monthly salary to sponsor a spouse or children on a Kuwait dependent visa (Article 22) is KD 800 in 2026. This was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 56 of 2024 and remains in force. Verified through your official salary certificate. Below KD 800 you cannot sponsor dependants unless you're in one of nine exempt professions.
Which professions are exempt from the KD 800 rule?
▾
Nine categories are exempt: (1) university and college professors, (2) doctors and medical staff, (3) engineers, (4) journalists and media professionals, (5) imams, religious workers and Quran teachers, (6) legal researchers in the government sector, (7) librarians, (8) pilots, and (9) sports coaches.
Can I bring my parents on a Kuwait family visa?
▾
Parents fall under Article 29, not Article 22 (which is for spouses and children only). Parent residency requires Director General approval on humanitarian grounds, case-by-case. The annual fee rose to KD 300 per parent in late 2025. There's no guaranteed right — applications are reviewed individually.
How much does a Kuwait family visa cost in 2026?
▾
KD 20/year for spouse or child under most sponsors. KD 40/year if sponsor is an investor or property owner. KD 100/year if self-sponsored. KD 300/year per parent under Article 29. Plus KD 130 annual health insurance per adult dependant and KD 50 per child.
What documents are needed for a Kuwait family visa?
▾
Sponsor: Civil ID, valid residency, salary certificate (KD 800+), tenancy contract, work permit, passport. Dependants: passport (6+ months valid), attested marriage certificate or birth certificates, passport photos, medical fitness certificate, and the MOI application form from a typing centre.
How long does the Kuwait family visa take?
▾
Typically 4 to 8 weeks from application to final stamp. Steps: entry visa issued (1–2 weeks), dependant enters Kuwait, medical fitness test (2–5 days), biometric appointment via Sahel (1–2 weeks), residency stamp + Civil ID (1–2 weeks).
Can my wife or child work on a Kuwait dependent visa?
▾
No. The Article 22 dependent visa does not grant work rights. To work legally, the dependant must find an employer willing to sponsor them and transfer to a work permit (Article 18) at their cost. Working illegally on a dependent visa risks fines, deportation and re-entry ban.
What happens if my salary drops below KD 800?
▾
The salary check is performed at every annual renewal. If your salary falls below KD 800, renewal may be denied unless your salary recovers or you qualify under an exemption. Some sponsors have been summoned by the Residence Affairs Investigations Department for cross-checks.
Can my child born in Kuwait stay without the KD 800 rule?
▾
Children born in Kuwait, and children under 5 born abroad to parents already residing in Kuwait, may be exempted at the Director General's discretion on humanitarian grounds. Not automatic — requires a separate application with proof of birth or continuous residency.
How do I check my Kuwait family visa status online?
▾
Open Sahel app → log in with Civil ID → My Data → Residency. Or visit eservices.moi.gov.kw and use your Civil ID + reference number. Both show real-time MOI database data.
